Treat Condensate Before You Drink

Water that beads on a coil started as vapor. That does not make it bottled water. The path from air to glass picks up dust, metals from cheap trays, biofilm in tubing, and whatever lived in the room. Drink it only after a clean path and a real treatment step.

What is in coil water

A dehumidifier drain is a useful demo because it is honest. The water is real. It is also a rinse of a dusty machine. Condensate can carry microbes from standing trays and metals from parts that were never sold as food-grade. A tarp overnight can pick up bird droppings and roof grit. Fog mesh can pick up whatever the fog already held.

If you would not trust the container, do not trust the water.

A simple treatment order

• Path. Food-grade tubing and tank. No garden hose that sat in the sun. No rusty paint tray.
• Sediment. A cheap filter that catches grit so the next stage is not a mud filter.
• Carbon. Helps with taste and some organics. It is not a sterilizer.
• Disinfect. Boil if you have heat. A proven chemical dose if you know the product and the wait time. UV only if the unit is rated and the water is already clear.
• Store closed. A clean jug beats an open bucket.

This is household field practice, not a lab certificate. If someone in the house is very young, very old, or immuno-compromised, stored commercial bottles are the safer first store.

What not to drink

• Standing water from a slimy dehumidifier tray
• Water that smells like a machine room
• Anything you cannot treat
• A drip you set to save pipes — that job is freeze protection, not a drinking reserve
